Forget ‘Party like Gatsby’ – this is the TRUE story of Americas ‘old time’ popular music. Discover the vibrant pioneering musicians who emerged from some of the wildest places in the American South and revel in the exciting journey that changed the entire course of music as we know it today.
Five women from Four countries join forces alongside Enrico Tomasso and rework the powerful tunes that brought fame to pioneers Louis Armstrong, Ma Rainey, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet and many others.
Not a pastiche, this show is steeped in facts – even the band name ‘The Traveling Janes’ is a proud reclaiming of a slang label for women who worked on the traveling railroad and tent shows of the 1900s. This bold music is as vibrant and relevant today as it was during the prohibition period and ‘The Janes’ aspire to embrace our 21st century ears with the same rapture and joyous spirit that the original composers intended. A celebration of the vaudevillian travelling shows that crossed the USA utilising the railroad, town halls and pitching up tents – their mission perform new music and engage their audiences in joyous entertainment.
Four of the band are flying over from New Orleans, Los Angeles, Singapore and Norway – these modern day ‘Traveling Janes’ being some of the most respected and highly specialised musicians in the world. Uniting for the first time as this band in london with highly entrepreneurial Scottish- American Ali Affleck, this truly is an epic collaboration.
