Develop your technique, sound and perform with an acclaimed jazz guitarist

Join experienced jazz vocalist and tutor Karen Lane for an inspiring performance workshop designed to help jazz singers develop their technique, style and confidence.

Through jazz-based vocal warm-ups, improvisation exercises and individual guidance, Karen will explore the skills involved in delivering a compelling performance. You’ll receive practical advice on phrasing, interpretation and stagecraft, alongside creative ideas for arranging your chosen song.

The workshop culminates in an informal performance for invited friends and guests, with each participant accompanied by acclaimed jazz guitarist Dominic Ashworth.

Whether you are refining an established repertoire or preparing to perform a jazz standard for the first time, this supportive workshop offers the opportunity to experiment, receive constructive feedback and put new ideas into practice.

Places are strictly limited to 12 performers, so early booking is strongly recommended.

About Karen Lane

Australian-born jazz vocalist Karen Lane combines more than 30 years of international performance experience with an academic background in voice science and speech therapy.

She has independently produced five critically acclaimed albums, frequently creating her own arrangements, and has taught jazz singing at City Lit since 2002. Karen has also worked as an Associate Lecturer in Voice at the University of Surrey.

Her career includes headline performances at Ronnie Scott’s and PizzaExpress Jazz Club, as well as an invitation to perform and present at the Second International Jazz Voice Conference in Helsinki in 2017.

About Dominic Ashworth

Canadian-born Dominic Ashworth is an award-winning jazz guitarist and an experienced, sensitive accompanist renowned for supporting vocalists with creativity and musical understanding.

After studying guitar at the University of Toronto, Dominic performed at Cuba’s Havana Guitar Festival and continued his studies in Spain on a scholarship. He later co-founded the group AH UM, a regular presence at the Glasgow and Edinburgh Jazz Festivals.

Dominic was named Jazz Guitarist of the Year at the 2006 Birmingham Jazz Awards and teaches guitar at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. His wide-ranging influences include J.S. Bach, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Paco de Lucía and George Benson.
