Makondo

Makondo are regular performers at Toulouse Lautrec, bring the vibrant rhythms, traditional flutes and living folklore of Colombia’s Caribbean coast to life in a powerful celebration of Afro-Colombian music and magical realism.

Makondo are a vibrant seven-piece ensemble from Colombia’s Caribbean coast, bringing the region’s rich musical traditions to life through rhythm, storytelling and song. Inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, their music evokes a world where folklore, memory and imagination meet.

Blending Afro-Colombian, Indigenous and Spanish influences, Makondo create a powerful live sound built around the haunting tones of Gaitas and Millo flutes, the deep pulse of traditional drums, and the infectious dance rhythms of Cumbia, Porro, Gaita, Puya, Bullerengue and Mapalé.

Formed in the late 1990s, the group are dedicated to preserving and reimagining the living folklore of Colombia’s coastal culture. Their performances combine earthy percussion, wind instruments and Spanish vocals, creating music that feels both ancestral and contemporary.

Named after Macondo, the mythical town in Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, Makondo invite audiences into a vivid musical universe where sound becomes story and rhythm carries the spirit of the Caribbean.

Having performed at major festivals across Colombia and internationally, Makondo continue to share the traditions of Colombia’s Caribbean coast through live performances, workshops and collaborations.
