Bezique performs a variety of acoustic jazz and café music from around the world. Their repertoire centres around the sound world of acoustic French jazz. It features works by Django Reinhardt, Richard Galliano, and Bireli Lagrene, as well as original compositions. They also incorporate an occasional, rarely-heard North African flavour into their repertoire through the inclusion of works by the Algerian chaabi pianist Maurice el-Medioni, giving them a uniquely cosmopolitan sound on the UK gypsy jazz scene.
Led by cellist Shirley Smart – ‘one of the UK’s leading string improvisers’ – known for her innovative and dynamic approach to the instrument, Bezique has developed out of a long-standing duo with guitarist Peter Michaels with whom she has performed at numerous festivals and venues, including Kings Place, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, St Ethelburga’s, Vortex Jazz Club, Wilton’s Music Hall, and the World Village Music Festival.
Bezique extends the duo to a quartet line-up, bringing together some familiar and popular faces on the London jazz scene – Mike Guy on accordion and Marcus Penrose on bass. This will be an evening of manouche jazz, musette, tango, chaabi, and swing, capturing the groove and feel that brings each of them alive, with virtuosic improvisation, dynamic interaction, warmth, and joy. Join us!
