This night of classic, straight-ahead jazz with a trio of some of London’s top young jazz musicians will put the spotlight on pianists Tadd Dameron and Cedar Walton, two of the genre’s foremost composers and arrangers from their respective eras. Described by Dexter Gordon as the “romanticist” of bebop, many of Dameron’s compositions have become jazz standards, and are known for their mixture of beauty, swing, and character. He was also one of the foremost arrangers for the biggest names in jazz of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.
Cedar Walton carved out a reputation as one of the great sideman pianists, working first with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and then an endless list of the biggest names in jazz history in a career of well over 50 years. Eventually, Walton also became known as a brilliant bandleader and composer, leading his own trio as well as groups such as Eastern Rebellion. Many of his compositions are now extremely popular within the straight ahead vernacular, and his creative and charming arrangements of many jazz standards feature on legendary records.
Pianist and singer Hugo Jennings will bring many of these tunes to life, as well as talking through the history of these two giants of American music. He has led his trio for nearly three years, featuring two of the most in-demand young jazz musicians in London, Lorenzo Morabito on bass and Louis Brown on drums. They have played and performed together regularly in this time and have the kind of understanding which makes their performances even more enthralling. Expect an exciting night of well-known and obscure compositions by these two great names, as well as arrangements of famous jazz tunes.
