Miles Davis 100 ft. Tom Stringer & NYJO
NYJO and trumpeter Tom Stringer celebrate 100 years since the birth of Miles Davis with a nine-piece ensemble performing music from Birth of the Cool and more from across his ground-breaking career.
A centenary celebration of Miles Davis
2026 marks 100 years since the birth of Miles Davis, one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz.
To celebrate his centenary, NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) joins forces with emerging trumpeter Tom Stringer for a specially created nine-piece ensemble exploring music from across Davis’ extraordinary career.
At the heart of the programme are arrangements from the landmark 1957 album Birth of the Cool, whose innovative nonet sound helped usher in a new chapter in modern jazz. Alongside these classics, the ensemble will perform original arrangements by Stringer, drawing on music from different eras of Davis’ ever-evolving career.
From the sophisticated textures of his early cool jazz recordings to music from later chapters of his career, Miles Davis 100 celebrates an artist who continually challenged the boundaries of jazz and changed its direction.
