‘…a saxophone heavyweight, at the height of his powers…’ – Blues and Soul Magazine
‘…Garnett has all the individuality, skill and stamina every star soloist needs…’ – The Evening Standard
Saxophonists Brandon Allen & Alex Garnett celebrate one of the great traditions in jazz, the Tenor Battle.
For this particular project, a wide range of saxophone pairings will be celebrated and reimagined.
Expect foot tappin’ rhythm and blues, classic hardbop, high energy modal blowouts, contemporary jazz and gorgeous full toned ballads.
Saxophonists Brandon Allen and Alex Garnett have been friends and musical sparring partners for well over 20 years.
The musical chemistry between them was apparent early on and is still very much the case today, both players inspiring the other to strive for greater heights.
Some of the more commonly known collaborations will include Dexter Gordon/Wardell Gray, Johnny Griffin/Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, Sonny Stitt/Gene Ammons and Al Cohn/Zoot Sims.
They will also explore lesser known as well as contemporary pairings including David ‘Fathead’ Newman/James Clay, Joe Lovano/Joshua Redman, Seamus Blake/Chris Cheek and Eric Alexander/Grant Stewart.
Joining the two tenors will be Liam Dunachie (Organ) and Dave Ingamells (Drums)
Brandon Allen is one of the UK’s most in demand saxophonists, working with a wide variety artists across various genres. He leads the Brandon Allen Quartet and Sextet, The Stanley Turrentine Project and the Brandon Allen Groove Band, The saxophonist with The Kyle Eastwood Band, touring internationally.
Has performed with Eric Clapton, Paloma Faith, Omar Lyefook, Gary Husband, Adam Nussbaum, Stefano Di Battista, Ibrahim Maalouf and numerous others.
Alex Garnett has been one of the leading saxophonists in the UK and Mainland Europe for over two decades, being instantly recognized by his dark, husky sound. A versatile musician and first call sideman, he has enjoyed success as both a jazz artist, composer and arranger, and an in demand session, studio and commercial saxophonist, having racked up countless recording credits along the way.
