As part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, singer and pianist Robin Phillips celebrates the music of legendary jazz vocalist and trumpeter Chet Baker.

Frequently compared vocally to Baker, Phillips has spent years studying the subtle vocal style that made Chet instantly recognisable and became synonymous with the West Coast jazz scene, while also having a significant influence on the development of bossa nova. He is joined by trumpeter James Brady, whose lyrical, melodic approach captures the intimacy and understated beauty at the heart of Chet’s music. Together, they explore the songs, compositions and unmistakable sound that made Baker one of the most compelling figures in 20th-century jazz, while his lifestyle, drug use and frequent encounters with the law also made him one of its most controversial.

Robin and James recently travelled across Europe interviewing musicians and others who knew or worked with Chet for a new documentary about his life and music on the continent. Inspired by the stories they uncovered, the evening’s repertoire may evolve, but will include favourites such as Almost Blue, Do It the Hard Way, Let’s Get Lost, The Thrill Is Gone and You Don’t Know What Love Is.

Joined by Charlie Pyne on acoustic bass, Alex Best on drums and guest guitarist Louis Thorne, Robin and James offer a deeply personal journey into Chet Baker’s fragile vocals, haunting trumpet sound and enduring musical legacy.

Singer, pianist and bandleader Robin Phillips is one of the UK’s most versatile jazz performers, known for his warm vocals, elegant piano playing and deep appreciation of the Great American Songbook. Equally at home in intimate jazz clubs and larger concert settings, he has built a reputation for bringing classic songs to life with authenticity, sophistication and charm.

Robin is the founder and musical director of the acclaimed speakeasy swing ensemble Pinstripe Suit, with whom he has performed at leading venues and festivals across the UK and Europe. He has also enjoyed a long-standing residency at London’s renowned speakeasy venue, Nightjar, where his performances have captivated audiences for over a decade.

Alongside his work as a performer, Robin is a broadcaster, educator and recording artist. His passion for jazz history and storytelling shines through in every performance, combining exceptional musicianship with an engaging stage presence. Whether interpreting timeless standards or celebrating iconic artists such as Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett, Robin brings a genuine love of the music and a distinctive artistic voice to the stage.
